# Power in Numbers (Protag) #

September 19, 2012

I know – you all weren’t expecting to hear from me for a while. I wasn’t exactly expecting to write another short post this soon, either.

Last night I was working on on of the small projects I mentioned in my previous post.

I was brainstorming for set-up details, and while mapping out the general government for the universe I’m creating I was trying to decided on the number of people to serve on a counsel (regardless of unpopular opinion of them in the media). I gave the subject quite a bit of thought before I decided that these are the sorts of things that belong in a writing blog – particularly since I was able to sort of figure it out.

So here I am.

This post is about numbers. When it comes to groups and character groups – teams, task forces, counsels – the number of active participants by itself can reflect many things about the people in that group and what that group was meant, designed or destined for. The number of individuals in the group alone preempts opinions about the direction or dynamic of the group and the story through how the members of the group interact with each other.

Bit of rant, but I’m posting this anyway:

Unfortunately, it seems that there are a lot of people here who are basing their opinions of House requirements off of iconic characters from the Harry Potter book series rather than *the actual requirements/characteristics*. There are selfish Gryffindors, lazy and dishonest Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws of average intelligence, and loyal Slytherins.

It is not a cut-cloth pattern. The point of the Hat is to sort based on potential and largest priority in terms of how students think. You can mix and match all of the attributes. You can use the attributes of EVERY house for both good or evil. Could you imagine how much more frightening Voldemort would be as an evil ruler if he had been a Gryffindor?

Harry himself has been selfish. Cedric Diggory was brave. The Great Wizard Merlin was a Slytherin. Peter Pettigrew was a Gryffindor.

These are not flukes. There are no good/bad houses.

Harry Potter just happens to take place during a time where the school was recovering from the influence of a powerful figure who had loyalties to a specific house. The characters that J.K. Rowling has in the spotlight do not at all make up the majority of disposition for anyone in a house.

For those of you who were wondering where my time had gone the last couple weeks, it’s to getting through the above listed work. I shall explain:

I know that you guys have been waiting to hear from me for a long time.

I’m sorry about the delay, but there were a few other things going on (being kicked out of the YGO contest, for one, and podcast recording for another). Hopefully this post will be worth the wait.
