# Power in Numbers (Protag) #

September 19, 2012

I know – you all weren’t expecting to hear from me for a while. I wasn’t exactly expecting to write another short post this soon, either.

Last night I was working on on of the small projects I mentioned in my previous post.

I was brainstorming for set-up details, and while mapping out the general government for the universe I’m creating I was trying to decided on the number of people to serve on a counsel (regardless of unpopular opinion of them in the media). I gave the subject quite a bit of thought before I decided that these are the sorts of things that belong in a writing blog – particularly since I was able to sort of figure it out.

So here I am.

This post is about numbers. When it comes to groups and character groups – teams, task forces, counsels – the number of active participants by itself can reflect many things about the people in that group and what that group was meant, designed or destined for. The number of individuals in the group alone preempts opinions about the direction or dynamic of the group and the story through how the members of the group interact with each other.

This is going to be hard.

Well, I thought that I would write today, just a little bit, about my brainstorming process for world and character building. You know, actually talk about stuff related to non-fanfiction writing?

I want to add that this is how I plan. I can’t account for anyone else nor can I say that every single living person will love and use the steps in this post.

But it’s a start. I would like to think that I’m including things that are universally important. I’m a paper-and-pen gal, though. Lots of people don’t like writing ideas down on paper. Some people type and make grids or draw maps. Others are just good at storing information in their heads. And there will be a lot of people who do follow these steps, but not in this order or they simply write and work all of the details I’m suggesting off of the top of their head.

There’s no right and wrong way express ideas.

Hello, there~

I’m typing this particular entry from Biggby Coffee Shop in Detroit, where I’ve made an appointment with a couple friends of mine so that we could “get work done”. Of course, by work, I mean, writing fanfiction. For the sake of sake of this conversation, these friends will be named Kory and Setsuna.

I’ll have to edit this post to let you all know how much “work” I actually got done – I suspect the amount of words will be around 0, because friends do not equal productivity.
